There is little doubt that we face some major challenges in the coming months and years, but only Labour can continue to deliver positive change against the backdrop of cuts being forced upon us by this Government.
As a former firefighter and Secretary of the Fire Bridade Union, I am used to dealing with volatile situations, and it always takes a cool head to make sure the correct decisions are made when under intense pressure.
County Durham Council has been and continues to be under pressure, facing over £180m in cuts as part of the Government’s ongoing austerity purge – however, Labour has continued to deliver the goods for our county.
There are significant cuts to come, as they are expected to continue into 2020 and beyond, and what is required more than ever to cushion their impact is the experienced proven representation that only County Durham Labour can offer.
Seaham is the poster child for regeneration. Since losing our collieries in the 1990s, new life has been breathed into our community – we are a division reborn.
Spectrum Business Park, the beautiful North Dock Marina, East Shore Village housing estate and seafront and Byron Place shopping centre, all delivered under a Labour County Council.
Along with my election running partners, we have invested our community budgets in a raft of local sports clubs, the Mini Police and a host of community projects that have really delivered an impact across the ward.
But for this to continue, people must vote Labour, so the great regeneration we have started goes on for generations to come. Please don’t take it for granted that other people will vote and Labour will remain – we need every vote out there.
If anyone ever needed an example of how much Seaham has changed in the last few years, we now have a Conservative Party candidate for the first time I can ever remember. It’s interesting, I don’t remember many Tories knocking on doors when our pits were being closed down 20 years ago!
