County Durham Labour is recognising International Women’s Day (March 8) to not only celebrate the achievements of women across the globe, but also stand with those currently trapped in the Ukrainian conflict.

Cllr Olwyn Gunn outlined how Labour councillors felt it was important to harness the national awareness day to further shine the spotlight on the plight of women suffering as a result of Vladimir Putin’s invasion of the country and show kindness and solidarity to those being attacked.

“Women have achieved and become successful in many walks of life,” said Cllr Gunn, Labour lead for Children and Young People’s Services. “These women are to be applauded but they are not the only heroines.

“Women who carry on in the most challenging circumstances are to be applauded. They are the ones who keep strong when all around them is crumbling and they seek only to support and protect. We know who they are. They are mothers, daughters, grandmothers, aunties and sisters and they are where they are needed at the frontline of support.”

Labour lead for Communities and Inclusion, Cllr Angela Surtees added: “Today on International Women’s Day, our thoughts and solidarity are with the Women of Ukraine. County Durham Labour stands shoulder to shoulder with the Women of Ukraine as they stand on the frontline in ways we cannot imagine.”

County Durham Labour’s message to the women of Ukraine is: “We feel your pain even at this distance from your suffering. We know your strength and your irresistible desire to protect your families. We know there is no limit to your courage to fight for your country.”

County Durham Labour stands with you in your perilous hour of danger.
