County Durham Labour has welcomed over £2m in Government funding to help keep people warm.
The grant funding has been allocated to the Warm Homes Local Grant which enables low income homes to qualify for a grant towards the cost of a new gas boiler, central heating or insulation measures.
County Durham Labour Leader, Cllr Carl Marshall, said:
“This is fantastic news for the county and will go a long way to addressing heating poverty in County Durham, when many families have faced the stark choice between going hungry and being warm in recent years.
“New boilers and heating systems offer far more efficiency and help people save money, not just now, but in the future too, something that is vital as energy costs continue to fluctuate.
“This is another example of a Labour Government delivering for people in our county, following February’s announcement of the largest Government settlement since 2010, with Labour awarding Durham County Council £48m.”
As well as heating homes the initiative also helps reduce environmental impact by reducing the amount of gas and electricity used.
