How can Spennymoor secure devolution under Labour…

With a Labour Government and new North-East Mayor overseeing regional devolution, now is the time for Spennymoor politicians to demand more control.

Labour has long supported devolution, promising to empower communities and shift decision-making from Westminster.

If Spennymoor pushes for “double devolution”— with power moving from Durham County Council to the Town Council— it can control of its own future.

What a Labour Government means for devolution…

Labour has already committed to deepening devolution across England, ensuring more power and resources reach local communities. Local councils will have greater financial autonomy, allowing them to invest in priorities and create strategies to boost local economies, particularly in former industrial towns.

This presents a huge opportunity for Spennymoor – if politicians are bold and seize it!

What Spennymoor should demand of Labour…

Labour has promised investment in jobs, green industries, and public services. Spennymoor must not be overlooked, utilising the £20m Towns Fund to attract investment for long term protection of local businesses.

Labour’s green investment strategy could bring new manufacturing, renewables, and digital jobs while Spennymoor also pushes for high street regeneration, benefiting from funding to boost local businesses and retail, through an arts, culture and leisure strategy, all underpinned by a drive to put families at the heart of planning.

Real local power, no more bureaucracy…

Devolution means decision-making power for Spennymoor, not another layer of local government. Labour’s commitment to empowering communities should translate to a masterplan giving control and influence over local transport, housing and economic development decisions, ensuring they reflect the town’s needs. This will ensure Spennymoor isn’t overshadowed by Durham City.

So, what is the role of local politicians? Litter picking or future proofing?

The Labour Government is creating opportunity, but it won’t happen automatically. It’s up to Spennymoor’s politicians to ensure the town benefits.

As a Labour Group, we’ll push the County Council to devolve power to Spennymoor Town Council, and work closely with the new North-East Mayor to secure investment and influence decision-making to benefit the people businesses and families of the town…and we want you to hold Labour to its promises, ensuring devolution leads to real change, not more bureaucracy.

We have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to change Spennymoor forever. To build a town at the heart of County Durham.

Disappointments of the past, or blame game politics some find amusing, are not what those standing to be your voice at Durham County Council are about – we have made a passionate commitment to work hard to enhance Spennymoor Town Council.

We believe unreservedly that this town is being held back by inaction and hesitancy. Talk from others about what the Labour Party is, or does, is not designed to build a greater good; it’s designed to deflect from inaction and a lack of inspiration.

Let us all play our part. Let us all have a say and let’s support those that really care about representing everyone.

Vote Labour on May 1st and reclaim your power.
